The People of RACES/ACS

We are a volunteer organization. As with all volunteer organizations, there is no organization without people willing to volunteer their time and expertise in the service of their community.

Our members have diverse backgrounds and experience. Some have been long time communications professionals while others are relatively new to the world of amateur radio and emergency communications. All of our members are united in the desire to be ready to serve their community when disaster strikes.

Our members are required to have an amateur radio operator's license. Licenses are granted by the Federal Communications Commission after passing a license exam. All of our members are also screened by the Marin County Sheriff's Department which then permits members access to a number of secure public safety locations such as police and fire stations.

Members participate in a number of training activities including courses in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS). These same courses are required for public safety employees at the local, state and national levels. Visit these FEMA websites for more information on the NIMS and ICS standards.
